17 BICENTENNIAL FAIR Camp Straus was the scene of a true county fair in August which brought to successful conclusion the Transylvania County Bicentennial Festival celebration. Olin employees were prominent throughout the long period of planning and putting on the festival which ended with the fair. Bob Robinson was co-chairman of ROBINSON both the festival and the committee which worked out the layout of mid way, tents, cattle show and others. In addition to the fair, the festival activities during the year included concerts, parade, watermelon feast, Old Fashion Week, and a Brevard Music Center community-thanks con cert. Two other facets of the cele bration were heritage, which recalled area history; and horizons; which looked beyond 1976. Ray Israel was chairman of the fair council whose other Olin members chaired committees: L. E. Callen der, concessions; Rita Morgan, publicity; Margie Mas ters, talent; Fred Kilstrom, contests; and Robinson, layout. Israel is pictured with Kitty Anderson whose Station WPNF broadcasting booth was attractive to young and older. Fritz Merrell was master of ceremonies at the fair’s opening where patriotic music was by the Calico Chorus. The ribbon cutting was by Larry Staples, John Candler and Don Parker, representing all Olin em ployees as host to the fair at Camp Straus. The Liberty Bell of tobacco, loaned by R. J. Reynolds, was a popular exhibit in the Bicentennial theme. In addition to the many Olin employees who helped through the Community De velopment clubs and other units, Israel and Robinson praised the Ecusta electricians who wired the fair on their own time, and the protection personnel who directed traffic on their own time.
